Whether you have braces on already or you’re thinking about getting braces, we are sure you’ve wondered how braces actually work!
Braces are made up of a number of different parts. The important ones to note are;
Brackets - These are the metal or ceramic squares that are glued onto your teeth and will stay there throughout your treatment.
Archwires - These are thin, rod-like metal wires. The arch wire is tied to all of the brackets snd creates force to move teeth into proper alignment.
Ligatures - The archwire is held into each bracket with a ligature which can either be a tiny elastic or a tiny twisted wire.
Conscious IV sedation is an anaesthetic and pain-blocking method that’s commonly used in dental procedures. We’ve used this technique to administer countless procedures here at Smile solutions and the safety and efficacy of IV sedation is well-documented. It’s a method which combines pain-blocking with minimal recovery time, allowing the patient to get on with their day once the effects of the sedative have worn off.

A biopsy is a procedure where a small piece of tissue is removed from an area so that it can be looked at closely under a microscope. The biopsy may aim to remove an area completely (an excision biopsy). This is usually only appropriate for small lumps or swellings. Occasionally only a small piece of an abnormal area is removed to confirm a diagnosis (an incisional biopsy).
Third molars are commonly referred to as wisdom teeth. They are usually the last teeth to develop and are located in the back of your mouth, behind your second molars. Their development is usually completed between the middle teenage years and early twenties, a time traditionally associated with the onset of maturity and the attainment of wisdom.
Although most people develop and grow 32 permanent adult teeth, many times their jaws are too small to accommodate the four wisdom teeth. When inadequate space prevents the teeth from erupting they are called impacted. This indicates their inability to erupt into the proper position for chewing and cleaning.
To keep you motivated to eat right while you have braces let’s first talk about why it’s important to avoid certain foods. You want your braces off as soon as possible to show off your smile, right? Then you’ll want to avoid hard, crunchy foods that can bend wires and pop off brackets, slowing down the braces process. And when you do get your braces off, you wouldn’t want to find yourself with a splotchy smile from soda stains outlining where your brackets were.
Invisible braces is a term used to describe a range of less obvious braces. This includes braces such as clear fixed braces (ceramic braces), aligners (such as Invisalign or our own YOURPRACTICE.ie aligners) and lingual braces (braces at the back of the teeth). These three options provide a great choice for a patient who wishes to be more discreet whilst going through orthodontic treatment.
If you are thinking about getting braces but would like a slightly more discreet option, then Invisalign might be the choice for you. Invisalign is a clear, plastic aligner. Treatment consists of a series of clear, removable aligners which are created to fit your teeth exactly. Every ten to fourteen days you will change your aligners for the next one in the series. Each new aligner brings your teeth closer to the desired alignment.
